Homemade Ice Cream in the Bag Toss

homemade-ice-cream-was-zippy-tour-1 Let’s be honest, the irony of swimsuit season being the exact same season as ice cream season is cruel. But before we dwell on it too long, let’s refer to the wise words of Erma Bombeck. “Seize the moment! Remember all those women on the Titanic who waved off the dessert cart.” Such a wise woman. I really don’t know anything about her, but I like her. I like her a lot. That’s right, ladies. Let’s not let a swimsuit hold us back from having a fabulous afternoon and a sweet taste of homemade cold cream. Let’s just do an extra lap in the pool and call it even. Life is to be enjoyed. And there is nothing in the world that is sweeter than an afternoon spent with your children in the sun making homemade ice cream. It’s a memory that never can be erased.

This recipe is especially fun, because it turns making homemade ice cream into a game for all ages. Below is the recipe. Once I have my ingredients duct taped up, I like to let the kids just throw it all around the yard. I have even seen church youth groups make huge batches and toss the mixture baggies up over a volleyball net. The possibilities are limitless. The most important thing is just to have fun and enjoy yourself! Make some lasting memories. Have a great weekend!

3/4 cup whole milk (plain or flavored)
1 cup heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 one quart zip-lock baggies
2 one gallon zip-lock baggies
1 bag crushed ice
1/2 cup rock salt
duct tape

Directions: Mix ingredients and sel in small bag. Remove air pockets, and place in 2nd small bag. Place small bags in a large bag and fill with ice and salt. Remove air pockets. Place in 2nd large bag. Wrap baggies in newspapers and duct tape firm. Toss for 15 – 20 minutes. Enjoy!
