Cinco de Mayo is a week away and if you are going to celebrate in a “mi casa es su casa” way, you better get planning!

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s defeat of French forces outnumbered almost two-to-one at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. While Cinco de Mayo has limited significance in Mexico, here in the U.S. we just run wild with it as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride…and a reason to show off our TexMex.

Although not Mexican, my husband lived in Leon, Mexico for two years…so naturally we take Cinco de Mayo a little too seriously. (Similar to how I celebrate Moon Festival with a vengenance even though I only lived in China for six months and wasn’t really a part of the festival while there. I know. I’m shameless.) Anywho, needless to say, I am hosting a fiesta of all fiestas this year and thought I would share my ideas this week.

I created this fun Cinco de Mayo Banner using images from a vintage Mexican napkin I found at a local antique store last winter. You can download the banner here. Each letter is about 5.5 inches around, which creates a very large banner. If you want to downsize the banner, you can easily do so using your scale tool prior to printing. I recommend printing thebanner on high gloss heavy photo paper for best results. Using a mini paper hole punch, punch holes on both sides of each letter. Take spare ribbon and tie the letters together. I did not have time to purchase matching ribbons for the photos, but for my celebration I am going to include ribbons with lots of different colors and textures.

Want more Cinco de Mayo ideas?
