{"id":15340,"date":"2011-10-27T02:42:44","date_gmt":"2011-10-27T06:42:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.loraleelewis.com\/blog\/?p=15340"},"modified":"2012-05-07T12:59:23","modified_gmt":"2012-05-07T16:59:23","slug":"the-tricks-of-pumpkin-and-squash-bowl-making","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.loraleelewis.com\/blog\/the-tricks-of-pumpkin-and-squash-bowl-making\/","title":{"rendered":"The Tricks of Pumpkin and Squash Bowl Making"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Where in the <strong>Halloween<\/strong> did October go? \u00a0Eek! <\/em> I woke up this morning and realized it&#8217;s\u00a0five days\u00a0before Halloween and I&#8217;ve got to get prepared.\u00a0To be honest though, I&#8217;m not scared. \u00a0Halloween is the one holiday where\u00a0I can\u00a0wear a wig\u00a0and a\u00a0LOT of makeup to cover those under eye circles and\u00a0no one\u00a0can say\u00a0a thing.\u00a0 It&#8217;s\u00a0100% disguised\u00a0as part of the costume.\u00a0 I love that about Halloween.\u00a0 That and\u00a0the fact that I can wear six inch heels (bringing me up to a solid 5&#8217;9&#8243;) and people don&#8217;t\u00a0presume I do anything\u00a0wrong for a living.\u00a0 <em>Fabulous.<\/em> I love the tricks of Halloween.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Another\u00a0little trick that you can really only use this time of year is utilizing pumpkins and\/or squash\u00a0as tableware.\u00a0 I love doing it because it looks impressive.\u00a0 I hope that doesn&#8217;t sound snotty.\u00a0 I\u00a0just enjoy\u00a0tricks that make it look like I put in more effort than perhaps I did!\u00a0 And\u00a0squash and pumpkin bowls\u00a0with very little effort always look beautiful and impressive on a fall tablescape. \u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;m not saying your neighbor is\u00a0going to go\u00a0home screaming from jealousy when she steps into your home and sees your gorgeous squash bowls perfectly set up in a row.\u00a0 But if she did,\u00a0would it make us feel bad?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0So today, I&#8217;m going to give you my step by step of how to make beautiful pumpkin bowls.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loraleelewis.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Loralee-Lewis-Pumpkin-Squash-How-To-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15378\" title=\"Loralee Lewis Pumpkin Squash How To 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loraleelewis.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Loralee-Lewis-Pumpkin-Squash-How-To-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.loraleelewis.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Loralee-Lewis-Pumpkin-Squash-How-To-11.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.loraleelewis.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Loralee-Lewis-Pumpkin-Squash-How-To-11-300x161.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">1. Choosing your squash. Any hard squash will work. As always, first things first. Preheat your oven to a toasty 375 degrees and spray your baking pan with a nonstick spray.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">3. Take your beautiful squashes and cut off the tops.\u00a0 If you have any pent up anger, you an pretend your squash is that certain frenemy down the street.\u00a0 I personally\u00a0have no experience whatsoever with it, but I have heard it\u00a0helps. \u00a0About an inch or so from the stem is about right.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loraleelewis.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Loralee-Lewis-Pumpkin-Squash-How-To-31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15382\" title=\"Loralee Lewis Pumpkin Squash How To 3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loraleelewis.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Loralee-Lewis-Pumpkin-Squash-How-To-31.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.loraleelewis.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Loralee-Lewis-Pumpkin-Squash-How-To-31.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.loraleelewis.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Loralee-Lewis-Pumpkin-Squash-How-To-31-300x277.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">4.\u00a0 Time to get dirty. Clean out that squash. Seeds. Stringy flesh. All of it, ladies. This may also be considered an anger-reducing exercise.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Just be sure to not scrape too hard on the flesh, especially on the bottom. <em>Ladies, we want to make squash soup bowls &#8211; not squash soup colanders.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">5. If you have a topsy-turvy squash, cut a thin slice off the bottom of the squash so it will stand upright.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">6. At this point, take a break and test the Halloween candy for poison.\u00a0 A good rule of thumb is four or five pieces per bag of candy to ensure %100 child safety.\u00a0 If you are an overprotective mom, you may want to go as far as seven or eight pieces of candy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">7. Brush your squashes with canola or olive oil and then lightly sprinkle with salt. Throw a pinch of salt over your shoulder&#8230;just for good measure.\u00a0 I always do.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">9. Place your squash bowls on your baking pan and bake for about 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">10.
